Moodle
What is this thing called Moodle?
Moodle is a Modular Object Oriented Digital Learning Environment – so what does that mean? It is a Curriculum Management System- CMS, which is very similar to what the State Government wants to introduce with its Ultranet. There are discussions in many circles windering why the Government is wanting to reinvent the wheel, when there is a FREE open source option available to all, and used by many schools across the state.
You can post your curriculum for the term, semester or year on Moodle, and have students participate in online forums, discussions, assignments, tests (which can be graded automatically). Students can message each other or you to ask questions, get clarification etc. Access to computers is not always needed. I have run my courses on Moodle, and it means you can allow parents access to see what is due, and when. Students have access 24/7 to all resources you put up on the site.
There is a huge support network out there for people using Moodle, so you only have to ask the question and someone will know the answer, whether it’s checking grades, adding plugins or back end stuff.
Moodle has a wealth of resources, ideas and information
Our Moodle site has a range of courses already created by a number of staff. There are courses there for students as well as staff. Professional Learning opportunities and a place to play and explore.
Moodle has the potential to be an amazing tool, where our curriculum is open and alive. Parents and students have access when they need it, or if you want a more private space you can put a lock on the door, and no one else can see what you are discussing.
Having used it now for a couple of years, I find I have my courses organised and it’s easier to roll over, as they courses can either be rolled over to the new one, or revamped. You have all workin one place, no more random emails here there and everywhere. It is well worth the time and effort to set up a course, as it gets easier down the track.

Hey Suz, where do you actually go to create a course? Sue and I can’t find anywhere on Moodle to do this.
